UUID Inspector and Validator

Validate a UUID and decode its version, variant, embedded timestamp, clock sequence, and node.

What this does

Paste a UUID to check that it is well formed and see what is inside it: the version, the variant, and, for time-based versions, the embedded timestamp. It accepts the canonical 8-4-4-4-12 form, uppercase, braces, a urn:uuid:prefix, or 32 bare hex digits, and shows the result in all of those forms.

What each version tells you

  • v1 and v6 store a 60-bit count of 100 ns ticks since 1582-10-15, a clock sequence, and a 48-bit node. A node with the multicast bit set is random, not a real MAC address.
  • v7 starts with a 48-bit Unix timestamp in milliseconds, followed by 74 random bits.
  • v4 is 122 random bits and carries no other information.
  • v3 and v5 are hashes of a namespace and a name. The inputs cannot be recovered; use the generator to reproduce one.
  • The nil UUID (all zeros) and the max UUID (all ones) are reserved sentinels.

Example

017f22e2-79b0-7cc3-98c4-dc0c0c07398f is a version 7 UUID created at2022-02-22T19:22:22.000Z. The inspector flags UUIDs whose variant or version digit is not defined by RFC 9562.
