What this does
Converts titles and phrases into slugs for URLs, file names, and identifiers. Type one title per line to get one slug per line.
How a slug is built
- Accents are removed (
CafébecomesCafe), and ß, ø, æ and similar letters are transliterated. - Apostrophes are dropped, so
It'sbecomesItsrather thanIt-s. - Everything that is not a letter or digit becomes a single separator, and separators at the ends are trimmed.
- The result is lowercased and, if you set a maximum length, cut to that length without leaving a dangling separator.
Options
- Separator: hyphen (best for URLs) or underscore (common for file names and database keys).
- Lowercase: turn off to keep the original capitalization.
- ASCII only: drop every character outside A to Z and 0 to 9. By default letters from other scripts, such as Cyrillic or Chinese, are kept. If you need a purely ASCII URL for such a title, enter an ASCII alternative yourself, since this tool does not translate between scripts.
- Max length: 0 means no limit.
Example
Hello, World! It's a Café Menu — 10 Best Ideas becomes hello-world-its-a-cafe-menu-10-best-ideas.
For other identifier styles such as snake_case or kebab-case from existing names, use the Text Case Converter.
