Word & Character Counter

Count words and characters as you type, with lines, paragraphs, and exact UTF-8 byte size.

What this does

Counts the words, characters, lines, and paragraphs in whatever you type or paste, and updates as you go. It also reports the exact size of the text in bytes, which matters when a field or API has a byte limit rather than a character limit.

How counting works

  • Words are found with the browser's Unicode word segmentation, so punctuation is not counted and languages written without spaces, such as Japanese and Thai, are split sensibly.
  • Characters follows JavaScript's length (which counts an emoji as two), and graphemes counts what a reader sees as one character. Both are shown, so you can match whichever limit you are working against.
  • Bytes (UTF-8) is the size if the text is saved or sent as UTF-8. Accented letters take 2 bytes, many other scripts 3, and emoji 4.
  • Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines.

Example

“Héllo wörld” has 11 characters and 2 words. Its two accented letters take 2 bytes each in UTF-8, so the text is 13 bytes long.

More detail

The tabs above the results list invisible characters, each code point with its UTF-8 bytes, and a whitespace view. See the Text Inspector page for what each view shows.
