What this does
Converts text into the binary representation of its bytes (eight 0/1 digits per byte) and decodes binary back into text. "Hi" is 01001000 01101001.
How it works
Text is first turned into bytes using a character encoding, then each byte is written as 8 bits. With plain ASCII that is one byte per letter. Anything beyond ASCII uses several bytes in UTF-8: "€" is 11100010 10000010 10101100. Pick UTF-16 or Latin-1 to see the bits those encodings use instead.
Decoding binary
Paste groups separated by spaces, commas or new lines, or a single unbroken string of bits. The total must be a multiple of 8; if it is not, the tool tells you how many bits it found. Characters other than 0 and 1 are reported with their position, and byte sequences that are not valid in the chosen encoding are reported with their offset instead of being replaced silently.
