JMESPath Tester

Run JMESPath queries against JSON: projections, filters, functions, and pipes.

What this does

JMESPath is a query language for JSON with a formal specification, used by the AWS CLI (--query), Ansible, Azure CLI, and many SDKs. Paste a document, write an expression, and the result updates as you type. Errors in the expression are shown with the parser's message.

Expressions to try

  • store.book[*].title — Project one field from every element
  • store.book[?price < `10`].title — Filter, then project (literals use backticks)
  • store.book[?price < `10`].{title: title, price: price} — Build new objects with a multiselect hash
  • max(store.book[*].price) — Call a function
  • sort_by(store.book, &price)[0].title — Sort by an expression reference
  • store.book[*].price | sum(@) — Pipe one result into the next expression

Behavior notes

  • A missing key evaluates to null rather than raising an error. This is how the language is defined, and it is why a typo in a key name shows null.
  • Raw string literals use single quotes ('text'); JSON literals use backticks (`10`, `"text"`).
  • The tester uses the community JMESPath implementation, which includes the standard functions plus later additions such as from_items, group_by, and string helpers.
  • Input is limited to 5 MB.
